Serving God's Word Through Biblical Hebrew (Part 2)

Part 2: He Directs my Steps: A Call to Biblical Hebrew

By Sizukiwe Vimbani

If I were to choose a scripture that aptly describes my journey to pursuing Biblical Hebrew studies, it would be Proverbs 16:9:

A man’s mind plans his way [as he journeys through life], But the Lord directs his steps and establishes them.

My name is Sizukiwe Vimbani. A young lady whose life is surrendered to the Lord’s leading and direction.

The Church has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From a very early age, I sensed that the Lord was calling me into ministry. For many years, I believed that this calling would be expressed primarily through music ministry, as this is an area in which God has spoken to me so clearly.

Over time, however, the Lord began to reveal that He has equipped me in more ways than I have imagined and is calling me to serve Him and His Church in more than one way. As He opened these doors, I chose to trust His leading, say "yes" to His call, and yield to the plans He has prepared for me.

In 2023, after a season of unemployment, I joined Wycliffe South Africa as the Field Coordinator for the Anglophone hub, serving South Africa, Namibia, and Lesotho. In this role, I have the privilege of supporting Bible translation teams working in various language communities. I serve as a link between translators and the wider organisation, providing encouragement, coordinating logistics, visiting projects, and helping address the needs and concerns of these communities.

I also serve as the administrator for the Psalms That Sing project. Through these roles, my eyes have been opened to the incredible work God is doing through Bible translation and the impact of making Scripture accessible in people's heart languages. Through this ministry, I was introduced to the study of Biblical Hebrew.

Today, I have been given an incredible opportunity to spend 15 months in Jerusalem studying Biblical Hebrew. This training will equip me to return and serve as an instructor, helping support Bible translation work across many language communities. The study of Biblical Hebrew is an important part of the translation process, helping translators to work directly from the original biblical text and contribute to greater accuracy and faithfulness in translation.

As I prepare for this next season, I am reminded that ministry is never a solo journey. Just as Scripture teaches that we are all members of one body, each person plays a unique role in God's mission. Some are called to go, others to send, encourage, pray, and support. Together, we participate in the work God is accomplishing among the nations.

I would therefore like to invite you to partner with me in two important ways:

Firstly, through prayer. Please pray for wisdom, growth, provision, good health, and for the Lord to use this season of study to strengthen Bible translation efforts for years to come.

Secondly, through financial support. Your contribution will help cover the costs associated with my studies and stay in Jerusalem, thus allowing me to fully engage in this training and return better equipped to serve Bible translation projects across Africa.

Thank you for considering being part of this journey. Whether through prayer, financial support, or words of encouragement, your partnership is a valuable part of what God is doing. May all of it be for the advancement of His Kingdom and, above all, for His glory.
