Johanna and Steve Pillinger

Position:
Johanna: Ethnoartist
Steve: Scripture Typesetter
Serving in:
South Africa
What is your role in Bible Translation (or nature of your connection to WSA)? Tell us a bit about what you do
Steve and I first joined Wycliffe Bible Translators in the early 1980’s and have served in Kenya, the UK headquarters and are now in South Africa (since 2011).
In spite of health challenges I have been able to contribute in various areas, such as prayer, assisting colleagues to engage supporters in their work; and presently I am doing artwork to increase awareness of Bible Translation.
Steve works as a Scripture Typesetter with translation teams all over Africa. His job is to format all text and content for newly translated Scriptures before printing. He also maintains the International Scripture Maps and Illustrations Repository.
Tell us a bit about your family
We have two adult children of our own – a son in Scotland and a daughter nearby - and an “adopted” adult son who we believe God brought into our family to share His love for him.
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
My main hobby is also my work: fine art! Mainly pencil portraits and water colours. I also love gardening, music, coffee with friends, cats, cheese and chocolate .
Steve enjoys reading, writing, and photography. He has published a Christian fantasy-fiction series, and maintains a well-organised photographic archive of the Pillinger family history.
What is something you enjoy about being part of WSA and/or Bible Translation?
During the past 40 years we have seen many, many people who for the first time would read a passage from Scripture in their own native language, and each time this has been a unique experience for us, as we see their joy and desire for more. This has been such a privilege and motivates us strongly to continue!
