What is your role in Bible Translation (or nature of your connection to WSA)? Tell us a bit about what you do
Our connection with WSA goes back to 1986 when we first joined Wycliffe – Harry was appointed Director for twelve years with Elsbeth as his secretary. We then took up a new assignment with the Europe Area Office, Harry acting as office manager from April 1998 and Elsbeth as secretary until 2016 when we once again returned to serve on the Wycliffe SA team as co-ordinators for Intercessors for Africa. This assignment ended in May 2022 as Harry’s health had deteriorated, preventing him from continuing.
Although our active involvement has come to an end, Elsbeth was asked to research and compile a booklet on the History of Wycliffe South Africa in preparation for Wycliffe South Africa’s 50th Anniversary in 2025. We both remain interested and committed to the work of Wycliffe.
Tell us a bit about your family
We have been richly blessed with four children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
What are some of your hobbies and interests?
Harry:
I love artwork, gardening and playing the guitar – although these things have reduced somewhat because of my health.
Elsbeth:
I love reading, particularly biographies of famous missionaries and other Christians, and also anything connected to the Jewish people and Israel.
What is something you enjoy about being part of WSA and/or Bible Translation?
We both treasure the Bible and view Bible translation as a priority - what a joy and inspiration it has been to be part of the Wycliffe Team for over 35 years. Each of our colleagues have proved to be unique with their own personalities, characters and gifting and it has been a privilege serving with them on the Team. The Intercessors have also become dear friends – their faithful prayers have enabled and sustained us all in our work. This has resulted in many Scripture translations being completed and made accessible to unreached and Bibleless people – all honour and glory is due to God for making this possible. He is worthy to receive our praise and thanks for all that has been accomplished!
