Growing Oral Bible Translation Consultants
There is a big need for translation consultants in the Bible translation world. These consultants play an important role in quality assurance, supporting translation teams and training translators. As Oral Bible Translation (OBT) becomes increasingly widespread, an important question is emerging: Is there a difference between consulting on a written translation and consulting on an oral translation? And how do we train consultants for this growing area of ministry?
In response to this need, the Wycliffe Global Alliance, together with other organisations involved in Bible translation, hosted a two-week workshop designed to develop the skills of oral translation consultants in training. The workshop was held in Benoni, South Africa, in September.
Participants explored a range of topics, including:
- The mission, competencies and role of a consultant
- Scripture engagement
- Oral exegesis
- Quality assurance in Oral Bible Translation
- Audio and visual technology for Oral Bible Translation
- Community checking through a practical simulation
- Checking practicum in cohorts, working with translation teams via Zoom
The combination of teaching, practical activities and opportunities to work alongside translation teams gave participants valuable experience in the unique challenges and opportunities of consulting for Oral Bible Translation.
Wycliffe South Africa was grateful for the opportunity to host this workshop and to partner with organisations from across the Bible translation community. We pray that what was learned will equip and encourage these emerging consultants and, ultimately, contribute to the quality and effectiveness of many Oral Bible Translation projects around the world.
