The Meetto people are matrilineal, tracing family lines through the mother, and traditionally matrilocal, with new couples living near the bride’s mother’s relatives. About 70% practice folk Islam, and while there is family pressure not to convert, it is less intense than in neighbouring Muslim groups, likely due to a long Catholic presence. The Catholic Montfort Fathers of Holland arrived in 1922, impacting non-Muslim districts. Evangelical churches are young, established by Mozambican evangelists, some of whom came north while serving in the army during the civil war (1975-992). The first Meetto converts appeared around 1988. Church growth is steady, and the recently published New Testament is widely used, with local churches requesting a complete Bible.
