Oil on Canvas.
Art, for me, has become intertwined with spirituality to such a degree that I can no longer completely separate the two. I strive to express the intangible in a tangible way, and am constantly challenged to explore ways of combining the natural with the spiritual. I explore themes of mortality and immortality, different worldviews and philosophies. Predominantly, however, all my art-making revolves around giving visual expression to ‘The Word’.

Amanda Laskey
Mixed media.
I began painting two years ago, after many years as a music teacher and mother. With more time to explore, I discovered a passion for textured art, where each piece includes a 3D element such as a tree, lighthouse, flower, or animal.
Much of my inspiration comes from the colors and moods of nature, and painting for me is an emotional journey of discovery as the picture reveals itself on the canvas. I am also a prophetic artist, creating works inspired by Scripture and the messages preached in church. My desire is that each painting not only reflects beauty but also carries a message of hope, faith, and encouragement.

Shelley Mattinson
Acrylic Line on deep Canvas.
Continuous line artwork with the theme "Seek Him at His Feet". Continuous monoline starts at one point, ends at another, and is never changing, which so represents God's love for Africa. The visual of the bare feet both represents rawness and realness, no airs and graces; they are beautiful in their complexity and simplicity. No feet are the same and it is said that the footprint of an individual is as unique as his fingerprints. Africa is just that, beautiful yet so diverse in its culture and yet the messenger loves all.

Elizabeth Speight
Oil on Canvas.
A set of canvases in oil of African schoolchildren and their teacher. When I learnt the theme for the Jubilee Art Exhibition was God Loves Africa, I realized these paintings bore witness to the fact that God loves Africa and is busy working here (Psalm 139:13-14).
Story Behind the Images
The woman at the top is a portrait of Joyce Nthuli, their class teacher. Hers is a remarkable story. She left an abusive husband and took her two boys with her.
After many trials, she ended up teaching children at the squatter camp by Sarmcol. She gave lessons in a container that had been left there. News that the container was going to be taken away caused Joyce to pray to God in front if her class that he would provide a place for them to learn.
One of the children in her class had a mother who was working for Caroline Hancock. Caroline Hancock bought the old HADCA building in Main Street, Howick, because they were moving their headquarters from there. That building was originally a school for Indian children, until the Group Areas Act forced them to move out of Howick.
Thebelihle Primary School for disadvantaged children got started, with Joyce Ntuli as one of the teachers.
The Methodist church in Howick has partnered with a Methodist church in America to produce what we can now see as the huge complex of buildings and classrooms and sports fields that is the present Thembelihle Primary School.
Many years ago, Ruth Fairlamb, a member of the Howick Arts Society, asked for volunteers to come and teach art at Thembelihle. That is how I met Joyce Ntuli. She is a gifted teacher. I heard her story when she spoke at the Opening of the school.
When I was teaching there I took photographs of the children to put on the cover of their art files so that I could learn their names. I also took a photograph of Joyce. Later, I did a series of paintings from these photographs.

Lindi Venter
Oil on Canvas.
From a young age, I often found companionship in nature, where God’s creation first spoke to me. My father’s love for birdwatching opened my eyes to the delicate and transient beauty of the world around me.
Today, birds remain God’s whispers to my heart—reminding me of His care, His presence in the ordinary, and His invitation to see the extraordinary in the small and often overlooked. Through my paintings, I hope to share that wonder and stillness, inviting others to glimpse His presence in the intricate details of creation.

Louann Young
Mixed media and watercolour.
My paintings are bright and vibrant. Some are realistic as in a Richtersveld oil landscape or a watercolour of the view to Table Mountain. While others are more abstract... but in some way, are reminiscent of the landscape. These all reflect my love for the African landscape where I have lived and travelled for the past 33 years.
