Psalms Songs Are Changing the Kaaps Community

Psalms Songs Are Changing the Kaaps Community

Interview with Shawn George, Coordinator of the Kaaps Psalms that Sing team called “Alive in Kaaps”.

Nearly 2 years on from the first Kaaps Psalms that Sing workshop, how are things going?

This has been a phenomenal journey. We have to date translated 42 psalms and counting. We have written an equal amount of songs that are studio ready. The team has grown in leaps and bounds and is developing into a group of skilled translators.

In 2023, we released 2 singles that were warmly received by audiences across South Africa. One of the songs(Psalm 124), "Assitie Virrie Yirre Vassie" was voted song of the year on one of our biggest Christian radio stations.

We were able to compile these psalms in print format.

Our next venture is recording an album of at least 10 songs.

What has been the reception from the Kaaps community?

The response from Kaaps community has been overwhelming. People seem to have the pride and dignity of the culture restored.

What about the wider community of the Western Cape?

A greater awareness has been cultivated. The work has brought information and a greater understanding to the wider community. People seem to have an appreciation and tolerance for the culture and different nuances of the Kaaps community.

How was your most recent production?

The most recent was sold out a few days prior to the event. God has been gracious. We introduced a few new Psalms. It was laced with loads of laughter, tears, truths, lived experiences, historical information, beautiful songs and musical mastery on stage.

What responses do you get from people after a production or after hearing a Kaaps translation or song?

People's lives are changed. People are asking for more productions. The shame of the culture is removed. The Psalms are made relatable and engaging. It becomes easier to understand.
