The Way is Open: Discoveries of a Six-Year-Old

It was a Sunday, and I was about six years old. Like every Sunday we went to church, and I went to Sunday school, but this time something was different. I felt a knot growing within me and a sense of doom coming over me. As we drove home, I was afflicted by terrible thoughts telling me I was going to hell, and I felt convinced it was true. But somewhere through the tangle of anxiety a Bible reference emerged in my mind: John 14. I didn’t know what the content of this passage was, so I went to my parents and they helped me find it in the Bible. My fears were washed away and for the first time I knew to whom I belong, and that I am safe in Him. The passage reads:

“Let not your heart be troubled. You are trusting God, now trust in me. 2-3 There are many homes up there where my Father lives, and I am going to prepare them for your coming. When everything is ready, then I will come and get you, so that you can always be with me where I am. If this weren’t so, I would tell you plainly. 4 And you know where I am going and how to get there.”

5 “No, we don’t,” Thomas said. “We haven’t any idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus told him, “I am the Way—yes, and the Truth and the Life. No one can get to the Father except by means of me. 7 If you had known who I am, then you would have known who my Father is. From now on you know him—and have seen him!” (John 14:1-7).

This is the beauty of what Christ has done for us. The veil was torn. The stone was rolled away. The door to His house is open, and there is no entrance exam. We only need to respond to His invitation to enter.
